Automotive Displays - Increasing and Challenging Market

Pushed by innovations and trends in the consumer electronic market (e.g. smartphone), interactive communication- and information systems become ingredients in modern and future automobiles. Generally people are not only used to mobile devices, but they need those devices for daily life. As consequence, digital information systems, providing all functionalities of CE-devices need to be available in cars as well and in order to fulfill this demand, according information- and interaction systems based on large displays and touch areas have to be integrated in interior-surfaces. Thus, displays dominate the cockpit design not only in high-end cars, but also in medium-sized vehicle and compact cars. As an example, Fig. 1 shows the cockpit of the new Mercedes a-class, launched in May 2018. The ultra-widescreen consists of two 10.25" displays bonded behind a large cover-lens. While the reconfigurable Instrument-Cluster-Display (ICD) can show all relevant driving information in arbitrary skins, the Central Information Display (ICD) is equipped with touch sensor area for intuitive and convenient interaction.
