3D Model Compression over ASCII Encoded Using Rotational and Reflective Symmetry

At present, graphics applications increase models complexity in order to get high quality images. Therefore, they are confronted with problems of limitations in memory capacity for object details. Optimizing memory usage by reducing the amount of data required for a 3D model with visual fidelity is one of strategies used. In this paper, we propose a new compression method to reduce the data size of a 3D model based upon rotational and reflective symmetrical computation by checking and removing its redundant parts. The encoded information is written to a file with its textures using our new human readable ASCII shape descriptor file format which is more convenient for users to comment and modify without corrupting an entire file. As a result, our method achieves up to 74.889% reduction in file sizes compared to Wavefront.obj file format with acceptable trade-off reconstruction times.
