Intelligent Charging for Electric Vehicles—Scheduling in Battery Exchanges Stations

This chapter explores intelligent smart charging schemes for plug‐in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and EVs in the smart grid. It introduces battery exchange stations into the demand‐side management system so that the PHEVs and EVs can help smooth the load on the power grid. While PHEVs will significantly increase demand for electricity on the power grid, the intelligent charging schemes can be designed to cope with the demand increase and enhance grid efficiency. The chapter proposes a game theoretical scheme so that the battery exchange stations can participate in the demand‐side management (DSM) system without handing over control to the control center. It also proposes several load‐scheduling schemes to minimize the peak‐to‐average ratio (PAR) while earning extra profits for battery exchange stations (BESs). The chapter demonstrates the proposed intelligent charging schemes for BESs in the smart grid.
