Recovery Node Layout Planning for Wired and Wireless Network Cooperation for Disaster Response

Rapid recovery of telecommunication network services after a disaster is a significant challenge. To quickly recover communication with high throughput in the affected area, a wired and wireless network cooperation (NeCo) system was proposed. When the wired communication for leaf nodes of optical networks is disrupted, surviving leaf nodes start to relay packets for these nodes via wireless bypass routes. Additional recovery nodes are deployed to improve the expected throughput, which is important for overcoming the limitation that the node distribution is determined by the demand distribution. However, the existing approach only optimizes the locations for a fixed number of recovery nodes regardless of the initial conditions such as topography and obstacles in the target area. Therefore, this paper proposes a planning scheme to optimally deploy recovery nodes. The proposed scheme can optimize the number and location of recovery nodes considering the relationship between throughput improvement and cost. The numerical simulations showed that recovery nodes can be efficiently deployed with the proposed scheme to improve the wireless link throughput, dealing with the conditions of the target area.
