Evaluation of phasor estimation methods for transmission lines with capacitive series compensation

This work aims to compare phasor estimation methods that can be used for distance protection of capacitive series compensated transmission lines. Five methods were analyzed, which are the Full Cycle Fourier algorithm, the same method with the Digital Mimic Filter, the Modified Cosine algorithm and two other methods more recently developed. Fault data were generated using the Alternative Transients Program (ATP) and afterward used in MATLAB routines. The Modified Cosine method has shown one of the best performances. It has one of the best time responses compared to the others, a small quantity of numeric operations per instant of time and has not presented a large quantity of failures for the first fault identification zone in the simulated cases.
