Sizing of battery energy storage system in distribution systems for voltage profile improvement

The operational flexibility provided by energy storage systems provides a number of benefits to electric power distribution systems. The impact provided by these systems can be considered in a planning phase of the operation or expansion of the system, so that the effects of existing operation or controls are maximized. This article proposes a methodology for optimized sizing of a battery system to smooth the voltage profile. The method was implemented using the MATLAB platform with the integration of the OpenDSS program. In this way, it is possible to estimate the most appropriate momments for charge and discharge depending on the forecast of the load and the power injection of distributed generation. The method was tested for the system of 33 bars in which the effects were compared with the presence or not of energy storage.
