Optimization of high-voltage transmission lines by modifying the bundle geometry

With the increasing of world population and energy demand, increase the power that can be transmitted on high voltage transmission lines using reduced right of ways is necessary. For this reason, this work presents a methodology to increase the transmission capacity of the lines and reduce costs by modifying the bundle geometry using compact lines. The presented problem is modeled as an optimization process, which is solved using a constructive heuristic approach based on two stages. The first stage performs a semi-exhaustive search while the second does a local optimization. In the mathematical model all the electrical constraints of the problem are considered, and some mechanical considerations are added. To test the capacity of this methodology, 500, 750 and 1000 kV lines were optimized using moderate bundles in the range of 0.457 m to 1.5 m. As result, compact line geometries with power gains up to 40.95% and an overall cost reduction of up to 42.50% were obtained. Since the lines obtained are smaller than the conventional lines the environmental impact of them is smaller. In this way, they represent a good electric, economic and environmental alternative for the new transmission line projects.
