Using IoT communication infrastructure for improving performance of power microgrids

The paper presents a solution for improving the performance of power generation in a distributed energy resources (DER) microgrid as component of a power Smart Grid (SG). The requirements for voltage regulation are accomplished by algorithms running on an IoT platform. The microgrid state information is obtained via an IoT communication infrastructure allowing acquisition from wireless sensor networks included in the Advanced Metering Infrastructure of SG. In order to avoid uncertainty in measurements, an optimization algorithm based on a Kalman filtering method is used. The experimental results confirm that the use of the IoT platform is beneficial for microgrid power quality control because helps in reducing the internet bandwidth and latency for immediate control action.
