Induced voltage study and measurement for communication system in railway

In the railway environment, communication systems via trackside cables are often used to provide point to point contact between different locations of the railway lines. Trackside communication cables, laid at the side of railway viaduct or tunnel, are running in parallel with the third rail which is supplying traction power to the rolling stock. Therefore, this study is to assess the electromagnetic influence of the third rail traction power supply (induced voltage) onto the communication cables, taking reference to the CCITT directive. The Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Tuas West Extension (TWE) project will be used as the case to study the impact of the third rail power supply operating in both fault and normal operating conditions, on the TWE communication systems cable.
