A workshop for faculty development based on the underlying pedagogical issues of ABET EC 2000

The authors have designed a modular workshop for engineering faculty which addresses differences in learning (using the KolbLearning Styles Inventory) and a schema for capturing the nature of knowledge (the Bloom's taxonomy). By using ABET and the need for successful accreditation as the incentive, and the simplicity of focus on the nature of the learner and characteristics of knowledge, they have helped empower faculty to address learning outcomes they find unfamiliar in an engineering context. This paper describes the two key constructs faculty must know to improve teaching and how the classroom experience can be modified on the basis of these constructs. In the process, faculty also address ABET learning criteria of teamwork, communication skills and ethics.
