Quantification of synovial cavity from knee X-ray images

The osteoarthritis (OA) is a common type of arthritis found in larger population in the world. Wear and tear occurring at the protective cartilage bone ends is the main cause of OA. To study the severity of OA, image Segmentation of synovial cavity in knee part is vital. In this work we propose an automatic segmentation algorithm for the segmentation of synovial cavity using image processing techniques. The OA affected knee images are enhanced using Wiener filter and image is binarized by applying thresholding. The region of interest is extracted by identifying concentration of synovial cavity. The unwanted region is cropped and synovial cavity is extracted by applying inverse transform. The segmentation results were compared with the manual segmentation obtained by the physicians and results are encouraging.
