On the representation of veristic variables

The distinction between possibilistic and veristic variables is pointed out, the former, such as a persons age, takes exactly one value, while the latter, such as a persons hobbies, takes any number of solutions. We introduce a number of different types of statements involving veristic variables and then show how these can be translated into expressions and constraints, within the framework of the theory of approximate reasoning. We discuss the methods for combining veristic information.
