Simulation and hardware implementation of PMSM driven solar water pumping system

This work proposes a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven standalone solar water pumping system. The proposed topology utilizes a solar photovoltaic (SPV) array that converts the solar energy into electrical energy. The energy obtained is used to drive the PMSM using a 3-phase voltage source inverter. The speed of PMSM is controlled in vector control using a hybrid proportional integral controller. The PMSM is coupled to a pump, which performs the pumping operation. An intermediate stage DC — DC converter is utilized for maximum power point tracking using an incremental conductance algorithm. A SPV feed forward term is introduced to accelerate the response of the system. The proposed topology is modelled and its performance is manifested through simulation studies using MATLAB/Simulink under different environmental conditions. A hardware validation of the proposed system is also carried out using a digital signal processor controller (DS-1004) on a develop prototype in the laboratory.
