End device energy optimization in ASPL for semantic sensor network

Energy is a major issue in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Sensor networks generate an immense amount of data which requires advanced analytical processing and interpretation by machines. Very few efforts on sensor networks are focused on the processing of emerging heterogeneous sensor data. Overhearing, which involves receiving same messages from multiple nodes, is another big issue in WSN since reception of messages consumes a significant portion of energy. The power consumption of a node can be reduced substantially by avoiding overhearing to increase overall lifetime of the network. This paper focuses on designing of a MAC protocol - Asynchronous Semantic Preamble listening (ASPL) for a semantic sensor network to avoid overhearing using semantic technology. This work also uses semantic technology to observe sensor data, processes those data using semantic model and transmit the data towards sink node. Sensor nodes, equipped with ontology, have remarkable semantic interoperability to receive and transmit the semantic data. We use this semantic interoperability to decrease overhearing by embedding the semantic data into the continuous preamble of a transmitted data packet as a short semantic preamble (SP). A real experiment shows significant improvement in energy consumption using the proposed method.
