A multi-objective distributed generation allocation and sizing using swarm intelligence based algorithms

This paper presents a solution to the distributed generation (DG) allocation and sizing problem in radial distribution networks (DNs) using swarm intelligence based algorithms. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Firefly algorithm (FA) and Novel Bat Algorithm (NBA) are used to find the optimal locations and sizes that minimize the total real line losses, total reactive line losses and maximize the voltage stability index (VSI). The Multi-objective problem is solved for various DG cases with respect to the system technical constraints. The proposed approach is applied to three DG cases for the IEEE 33 bus radial distribution system. The results reveal that installing three DGs in the system is having a great positive impact on the overall system performance. However, other economic factors may affect the choice of the right DG arrangement.
