A window based threshold technique for improved post event analysis using SPMs

The present-day power system is a complex network which interconnects several devices. An event or a disturbance in this complex network unless detected and curtailed would result in cascading power failures and huge loss of power system resources. Disturbances such as short circuits on the transmission lines, large and sudden loss of generation or load, relay actions required for line tripping and line reclosing, etc. are very frequent in the power system network. Recognition of such events helps the operator to take proper control and protective actions to safeguard against wide spread power outages and to retrieve the system to its conventional state thereby curtailing the loss. The phasor measurement units (PMUs) are being increasingly employed in the electrical transmission and distribution networks with the prime focus of detecting these events. the power system engineers. The term event refers to state disturbances or sudden changes in the sophisticated power system network. This paper presents a window-based threshold technique for the purpose of improved post-event analysis using synchro-phasor measurements (SPMs). Case study using the standard IEEE 9-bus system is presented with a view to demonstrate the proposed approach and to substantiate its ability to detect the events.
