Synchrophasor based concurrent swing and state estimation of synchronous generator

With the invention of PMUs, researchers are very much keen to increase its utility in the power system. In addition to protection system, PMUs use is to be increase to different parts of the Generation, Transmission and Distribution. To increase its utility towards rotor angle stability part, state estimation using different control filters is considered as very useful tool. Disturbances such as short circuits on lines, large and sudden loss of generation or load, or relay actions required for line tripping and line reclosing occurs very often in a power system network. These disturbances deal with severe power swings for which we need perfection in the measurement of states of synchronous machines, so that significant logistical challenges regarding rotor angle and speed which intricates the swings and estimation of synchronous generator. The process of synchrophasor based swing and state estimation is mainly brought so that overdependency upon the protection schemes for the loss of synchronism can be avoided. Therefore, the rotor angle and rotor speed are the important states which needs to be estimated. In this paper EKF based method is used to capitalize the estimated states using phasor measurement unit entities. The formulation is decentralized and estimation is done locally at the PMU level. The PMU sends the synchrophasor data to central controller at the PDC (phasor data concentrator) level. Case study using standard power system model with the help of MATLAB is shown using proposed approach so that the usage of PMU in power system can be increased.
