Research on fault current limiter based on fast switching technology

With the system capacity and load increases, short-circuit current exceeding the standard has become one of the outstanding problems. In some economically developed areas, short-circuit current is much greater than the current breaking capacity of circuit breakers. Short circuit current will seriously endanger the safety of power systems, bringing down the power quality, voltage sag and other issues. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the current breaking capacity of circuit breakers to bare the huge amplitude of fault current. As the fault current limiter (FCL) is often used to solve over-current and voltage sag caused by fault, the fault current limiter technologies need to be studied. This paper introduces the background and existing problems of the traditional fault current limiter. In order to save more electricity, we propose an energy-saving fault current limiter based on fast switching technology, and introduce its topology and key technologies. Finally, the current-limiting effect is verified through the simulation in MATLAB, and the economic effect is verified through calculation.
