Numerical model for flow on stilling basin type III

In some hydraulic structures, the impact and friction of water borne particles affect the surfaces and cause the abrasion wear, which reduces their service life and imposes additional rehabilitation costs. These particles can be in the form of bed or suspended load under the effect of the governing equations of fluid flow which are the conservation of mass, energy, and momentum. The abrasion wear occurs on the exposed concrete surfaces of hydraulic structures by two forces which are the friction force and the impact force which leading to abrasion damage. In this research, a numerical work using the FLOW3D software was conducted to determine the most critical areas in stilling basins type III where abrasion wear is most likely. The numerical study on a stilling basin type III using the FLOW3D showed that the abrasion effect is most probable on the surfaces of chute blocks and baffle piers due to the large velocities and pressure.
