Junction Activation of CdTe/CdS Solar Cell Using MgCl2

A comparative study of CdTe/CdS junction activation using MgCl
₂
and CdCl
₂
is discussed. Voc, Jsc, FF and efficiency of the devices were comparable in both cases indicating that CdCl
₂
can be avoided in the processing of CdTe solar cells. From a survey of the device parameters of small area devices at different locations of the large substrate it was observed that MgCl
₂
activation results in higher spatial uniformity. Extent of S diffusion was significantly higher for CdCl
₂
activated devices at the same conditions, indicating that either the recrystallization process or the grain boundary passivation is distinct for both cases.
