Image processing used for the recognition and classification of coin-type ancient artifacts

The paper aims to address, via an inter-disciplinary approach, the necessity of applying computer vision concepts to various fields of research, like the study of circular shaped, ancient historical artifacts. A series of hardware and software instruments were designed in an effort to assist the numismatist with complementary scientific knowledge and mathematical arguments necessary for coin expertise reports. By approaching the numismatic field from an engineering perspective, the main goal is to adapt and apply the newest instruments, with proven reputation in the industrial environment.
