Prematurity causes the CHR Tsevie (Togo) in 2016

Prematurity is one of the leading causes of newborn death in Africa and a major public health problem. Premature delivery is still a constant concern in obstetrical practice. In addressing this issue, we set a goal to discribe etiologies and risk factors for preterm delivery at the maternity ward of CHR Tsévié. This is a descriptive retrospective study of the records of admitted or referred deliveries of premature births to the maternity hospital of Tsévié, and from January 2016 to September 2016 or a 9 months-period. One hundred premature births were registered from January to September 2016 in 1,212 deliveries or a frequency of 8.25%. The most represented age group is that between 20-35 years or 50% The average age is 26.95 years with extremes of 15 to 45 years. The difference between age brackets was not statistically significant. The incidence of prematurity was 8.25% during the study period. The fetal factors that influenced prematurity were multiple pregnancies and the existence of congenital malformations. The factors related to the appendices were the premature rupture of the membranes. Actions must be taken on these various factors to reduce the incidence.
