Design and implementation of a microgrid-fault response system

This paper proposes a novel approach of fault detection and location within electrical power grids. As being vulnerable to various types of faults in the system: Line to Line(L-L), Line to Ground(L-G), Line to Line to Ground(L-L-G), Line to Line to Line to Ground(L-L-L-G), the grids also suffer due to the harmonics within the transmission line due to the increasing dependency and interconnection of Renewable energy sources to the grids. In this paper, the Indian transmission grid synchronized with Intelligent Electronic Devices(IEDs) are employed to get the system parameter values and transfer it real-time using Profibus to the microprocessor which then sends the data to the database. From the database, the data is then drawn into the SCADA control system and the operation of isolation of a faulty node is performed on the grid side. An Intelligent system is developed using Dynamic algorithm where the database filters the incoming data and directs the data according to the program into two different databases. Each database is used for the purpose of detecting the system status and identification of the type of fault along with its values. Fault prediction is performed where the approaching fault is detected so that appropriate measures may be implemented to prevent the occurrence of that specific fault. Thus, an efficient protection of smart grids from any expected fault and isolation ofthat specific node to prevent the spread of fault to other healthy nodes can be performed.
