Effect of flux concentrator on the surface hardening process of a steel gear

The objective of this paper is to determine the suitable parameters of the induction coil like (Geometry, number of turns and dimensions) suitable for surface hardening of carbon steel CK-45 gear. Also, it deals with the determination of the magnitude and the frequency of the current required for the hardening process in the specified time. The gear external surface must be hardened to a certain depth to achieve better mechanical performance. The flux concentrator option used for this purpose analyzed in this paper and its effect has been determined. The electromagnetic-thermal coupled analysis adopted the Finite Element Method (FEM) in this research using the ANSYS computer package. The results show the proposed design with and without the flux concentrator and declare the differences between the two cases from different aspects.
