Performance Comparison between Conventional and Robust Control for the Powertrain of an Electric Vehicle Propelled by a Switched Reluctance Machine

Switched Reluctance Machines (SRMs) are today an alternative to rare earth magnets machines used for electric vehicle propulsion. However, the highly nonlinear behavior of the SRMs makes the design of their controllers difficult. Therefore, the classical controllers are not sufficient to obtain good performances. The aim of this paper is to design a Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control (STSMC) for both the current and the velocity control loops simultaneously. The main contribution of this control technique is to reach better performances regarding tracking's quality of the velocity profile, the current reference and the minimization of torque ripples. Moreover, a comparison of performances between classical control, Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Super Twisting Sliding Mode Control (STSMC) shows through simulation results the superiority of the latter.
