A hybrid relay node selection strategy for VANET routing

In the Vehicle Ad hoc Networks (VANET), the sender generally adopts the strategy of selecting one relay node as its next hop for transmission. Due to the high-speed movement of vehicles, it has a high chance to cause communication breaks. In order to handle this problem, we propose a hybrid relay node selection strategy, which combines two typical selection strategies: one is to choose a relay node which is closest to the destination. The other is to choose a relay node which has the best link status with the sender. By applying this hybrid strategy, the sender can transmit the packets to two different relay nodes, which brings the robustness to the communication. Simulation results demonstrate that our strategy improves the packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay comparing to a single relay node selection strategy.
