Energy efficient tree construction for ZigBee router network

Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN s) are ad-hoc, battery powered, energy constrained networks requiring energy efficient routing protocols for longer lifetime. Energy efficient dynamic power management techniques can be used to reduce the power consumption by shutting down some components of sensor nodes. ZigBee is a communication protocol for low cost Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN s) built on IEEE 802.15.4 Standard. ZigBee devices providing self configuration and self healing mechanisms are vulnerable to unexpected error environments and require longer time delay to be recovered. This paper proposes a ZigBee network topology which always minimizes the number of active ZigBee routers by turning off other routers that do not serve any end device within its range. In addition to it, an Enhanced Self Configuration(ESC) scheme is proposed which is capable of dynamic reconfiguration of the tree, fast recovery and also avoids orphan propagation problem.
