VDSL2 capacity performance evaluation: Simulation vs measurement

There are many latest Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology via twisted pair cable growing in telecommunication industry recently such as Very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) Vectoring, Super Vector profile 35b, Gigabit Fast Access to Subscriber Terminal (G.fast) and XG.fast (the 5th generation broadband) that could give a higher multi-gigabit speed to customer depending on the cable distance. However, VDSL2 technology is still being rolled out across most country as it can offers ultra-high speed up to 200 Mbps downstream/ upstream. This bandwidth will vary depending on the profile and location as well as quality of the copper cable. This paper describes capacity performance study between simulated and actual data for both upstream and downstream direction for VDSL2 profile 17a. A channel model with attenuation and stochastic crosstalk model based on copper cable characteristics were used in the simulation process to calculate the speed. The speed performance analysis were done at various cable distance from 200m to 1300m (effective distance for VDSL2 technology) and the results of the analysis shows that the simulated and actual speed are correlated with respect to attenuation and signal to noise ratio graphs. This simulated bandwidth has the possibility of enabling precise estimation of copper cable capacity before any transceiver equipment is installed at the outdoor cabinet of the located area.
