Harmonic oscillator: A classical fundamental building block for modern electric power control

Due to proliferation of advanced digital hardware, real-time implementation of discrete-time control systems and its associated digital blocks is gaining a lot of momentum. Harmonic Oscillator is a mathematical implementation of a sine and cosine waveform generation with adjustable fundamental frequency and harmonics with adjustable phase differences, typically used in power electronics based control applications in power systems and drive systems. The present paper aims at mathematical analysis of this building block in both analog and discrete domain to investigate the control system stability of its implementation by using prominent discretisation methods and their suitability in power control applications. The DSP implementation results with two sample applications are finally presented for verification.
