Women in computer science: A liberal arts perspective

The computer science industry continues to expand acting as a catalyst for development in every field it extends into. However despite extensive study, internal challenges particularly those facing women, have not experienced an equivalent degree of advancement. In this paper we present our analysis of women's participation in the industry. Beginning with a brief summary of the past 30+ years, the forthcoming sections observe both academic and occupational arenas through a theoretical lens. Our research incorporates a succinct description of personality typing and its role as a constructive function to distinguish patterns that shape current facets of the computer industry. We also highlight a specific sociological behavioral pattern and how it affects change including the firsthand accounts by current students from specific nationalities providing a basis for identifying global methodologies. We also discuss the outcomes in both educational and occupational sectors including the applicability of liberal arts to the industry as well as recommendations on what can be done concludes our findings.
