Performance enhancement of microstrip patch antenna using defected patch structure

In this paper a new form of antenna is proposed called patch antenna with Defected Patch Structure (DPS). In this regard a comparison is made between two simple patch antennas with and without DPS. Antenna with DPS shows an improved performance in multiband characteristics and bandwidth enhancement. The proposed antenna operating at Ku (12–18) and K (18–25.5) bands is resonating at three different frequencies of operation 14.78 GHz, 16.96 GHz and 19.98 GHz with return losses of −22.53 dB, −21.96 dB and −14.79 dB respectively. The maximum achievable bandwidth by this antenna is 4.62 GHz. ANSYS HFSS tool is used for design and simulation of the antennas. The proposed antenna can be suitably used for satellite (Tracking Data Relay Satellite), space (International Space Station) and radar communications.
