New embedded nanosecond pulse generator based on spark gap and IGBT

A new architecture of high voltage pulse generator has been proposed. It combines two types of switches' technologies: IGBT used as an opening switch and spark gap used as a closing one. Additionally two types of energy storage: inductive and capacitive are employed in the quest for a better performance, dedicated especially for embedded applications. The new architecture has several advantages such as a simple structure and driving system, high and stable repetition rate, which can reach some kilohertz, a very short rising time of a few nanoseconds, a very high gain and efficiency. The present generator doesn't need a high voltage supply — just a tens of volts input suffices to produce a several-kV voltage pulse, what makes this architecture adequate for embedded applications. The paper describes Matlab simulation implemented to check the functioning principal and a prototype generator, which has been built and tested in the lab. The obtained results confirmed the theory behind the design.
