SLUM: Smart location update mechanism for random mobility model

WiMAX is considered as a broadband wireless technology that is capable of delivering voice, data and video services. Since that these services should be available during the movement of Mobile Subscriber (MS), mobility is an important issue in WiMAX networks. Therefore, dealing with the random motion of MS in handoff operation is a great challenge. This paper focuses on the balance between having updated information about the current location and the overhead incurred due to the scanning activity in random mobility model. In this paper, a Smart Location Update Mechanism (SLUM) is proposed to deal with a random motion of MS in handoff operation. The proposed scheme takes the decision about when to begin the scanning activity. In addition, it reduces the number of Base Stations (BSs) to be scanned by selecting only two BSs according to some criteria. The numerical results show that SLUM reduces the scanning delay, the scanning cost, and total handoff latency.
