Impact of integrating wind and solar energy on vulnerable power systems

Energy crisis has become a formidable challenge for Pakistan; since, it is threatening Pakistan's economic and social goals as well as international environmental obligations. In order to respond to this challenge and its associated problems, the government of Pakistan (GoP) conceived a Renewable Energy Policy in 2006 to increase investments in renewable energies (RE) sector —with particular focus on wind and solar energies (WSE). But, power system of Pakistan (PSP) is weak and, thus, vulnerable to impacts of integration of WSE; that is, its security, stability and reliability is highly likely to be disturbed. In this paper, we analyze possible impacts on PSP after integration of WSE. Analysis reveals problems, like, thermal overloading, voltage violations and generators’ oscillations following integration of WSE. Afterwards, we propose solutions to mitigate and reduce these undesirable impacts.
