Advanced driving/braking control design for electric bikes

This paper gives an idea of realization of an integrated driving-braking control unit for electric bikes based on the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control. We apply field oriented control (FOC) for the driving unit and braking section design, two ways are jointed together for adjustment of the braking torque of a customized brushless DC hub motor (BLDCHM). The major one is to proceed the idea from software design, using a program to alternate the duty cycle of pulse width modulated commands for braking torque adjustment according to the road condition. The design has been practically realized for an electric bike with a BLDCHM. All results have been extensively verified via a variety of real-world experiments.
