Investigation into the impact of PCC parameters on voltage stability in a DFIG wind farm

Short Circuit Capacity (SCC), Short Circuit Ratio (SCR), and the system X/R ratio are the most important parameters in dictating voltage stability at the Point of Common Coupling of distribution networks connected to Wind Power Plant (WPP). This paper investigates the effect of SCC, X/R, and SCR on important voltage stability criteria at distribution network interconnection points for WPPs. These criteria are: voltage profile, maximum permissible active power can be injected by WPP, step-voltage variation due to changes in wind power generation, and reactive power requirements. Analysis studies have been carried out using IEEE standard distribution systems connected to Double Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-Based WPPs. The results demonstrate that the voltage stability requirements are hardly provided at connection points with a small SCC, SCR and X/R values. These findings will aid in guiding decisions regarding the selection of feasible networks to which WPPs can be connected to where grid code requirements would be satisfied.
