An investigation on cross-shaped fishnet metamaterial for W-band radar application

In this communication, we investigate on the performance of across-shaped fishnet metamaterial operating at W-band (70-110 GHz). An NRW characterization methodis employed to extract the DNG character of the proposed fishnet structure. An array of 15×15 such unit cells constitutes a layer is considered as a metasurface and 5 such fishnet metasurfaces when combined with a W-band horn in order to develop a lens antenna, suitable for radar application. The gain of the electromagnetic radiation from the W-band Lens antenna has been improved by 5-6 dB, and cross polarization level is found below -20 dB, which is suitable for low loss long distance transmission. The metamaterial structure as lens has been designed, simulated and optimized by commercially available ANSYS HFSS Software.
