Optimization of 12S-14P permanent magnet flux switching motor (PMFSM) for electric scooter application

Eclimo electric scooter is a two in-wheel battery powered electric vehicle used for transportation. Size of its electric motor is 11inches (or 279.4mm) in diameter. It has torque of 110Nm and power output of 6kW. However, taking the size of surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM), this torque and power are less suitable to sustain long distance travel for it risks quick demagnetization and high copper loss due to overlapping winding. To solve this challenge and increase motor's performance, 12S-14P flux switching permanent motor with concentrated winding employing segmental rotor (PMFSM) in outer rotor configuration has been presented. This motor has all active parts located on the stationary stator leaving rotor robust for speed application. The initial design of proposed motor did not achieve the target torque of 439Nm and power of 45kW due to low flux linkage. This paper presents the optimized design of the proposed motor using deterministic approach. Finally, motor's performance in terms of torque achieves four times higher and output power of seven times higher than performance of SPMSM installed in eclimo electric scooter under maximum armature current density.
