Smart indoor positioning using BLE technology

One of the prime challenges in indoor positioning is to determine the location of users inside the building. Many technologies have been used for indoor positioning system but requirement is low cost, energy efficient and stable technology. To fulfil this requirement, Bluetooth low energy (BLE) tags are used due to its low cost and energy efficiency for positioning of user in the indoor building. Our approach is deployment of BLE tags on the ceiling of rooms and Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of tags is calculated. When any smart phone enters within the range of BLE tags which are already deployed in the rooms, the tag with high received signal strength will be nominated and information of that tag along with the information of user will be uploaded to the Web server. And user can see its own location from his smart phone. In this way, it's easy to locate the user inside the building. This method is easy to implement due to its low complexity. In this paper, the department of Telecommunication MUET Jamshoro is used as case study and tracked the working staff within the department.
