Impacts of droop and deadband on generator performance and frequency control

This paper illustrates the impact of different governor deadband and droop controls on generating unit performance and its impact on primary frequency response. Actual interconnection frequency data is used for an open-loop analysis of steady-state controls. Additionally, simulated dynamic behavior of a generating unit under different droop and deadband settings have been shown in order to describe how units support primary frequency response. Synchronous machines as well as non-synchronous resources are considered, and for non-synchronous resources, a discussion of lost opportunity cost associated with frequency response is provided.
