Radar reflectivity and motion characteristics of pedestrians at 300 GHz

Low-THz sensors represent the new research trend in the automotive industry [1], as this technology can offer high radar image resolution and, in particular, enhanced objects classification compared to commercial automotive radar systems, due to the wide operational bandwidth and narrower antenna pattern for a given aperture size. Study on Electromagnetic scattering and micro-Doppler signatures of pedestrians are fundamentally important in pedestrian recognition for developing robust pedestrian collision avoidance systems. Measurement Results of Radar Cross Section (RCS) of a pedestrian dummy and analysis of the micro-doppler (μ-D) signatures are presented for the first time at 300 GHz to demonstrate the potential of low-THz radars to detect and identify pedestrians.
