Vocoder susceptibility to baseband Trojans

This paper reviews the previously published secure software defined radio frameworks for security issues related to vocoders which perform voice encoding and voice decoding. This paper analyzes prominent vocoders used in Military communications: CVSD, MELPe, and TSVCIS. It was found that these vocoders are susceptible to baseband hardware and software Trojans. MELPe performed better due to the noise pre-processor. TSVCIS running with higher quality than MELPe were more susceptible to baseband Trojans which indicates additional security monitoring on the residue bits is required for Trojan detection.
