Modeling and simulation of four switch three-phase BLDC motor using anti-windup PI controller

This paper presents an efficient and cost worthy BLDC motor drive by reducing number of switches in power converter. The BLDC motor is widely used in many applications because of high efficiency, low maintenance, high torque and easy control technique. Conventional BLDC motor drive has high switching losses because of six numbers of switches. Four switch three phase inverter (FSTPI) results in low switching losses. BLDC motor drives are non-linear in nature. In most of the BLDC motor drives conventional PI or PID controllers and PWM techniques are used for speed control. Therefore, BLDC motor drives have strong saturation which results in windup phenomenon. Windup phenomenon introduces large overshoot and settling time in speed—torque characteristic. An anti-windup (AWC) PI controller and hysteresis current controller have been used for effective utilization of proposed system and also, to remove windup phenomenon. Four switch three-phase BLDC motor drive with an anti-windup PI controller is modeled using MATLAB/Simulink software. Dynamic characteristics of the proposed system have been examined and simulation results are presented, comparative study of proposed system with conventional six-switch three phase BLDC motor is done to prove system effectiveness.
