MATLAB GUI design for heart rate monitoring using smart phone camera

The heart, which is at the head of the vital organs, carries the oxygen and nutrients needed for the cells of the human body to the cells by being strained and loosened through the veins surrounding the body. HR-heart rate measurement is an important consideration for human health. The HR increase and decrease also indicate that the individual is subject to any disease and physiological effects as well as may vary depending on the state of instant excitement fear joy. Heart rate monitoring (HRV) can be used as a preliminary diagnostic tool for individual's heart health. In this study, the heart rate was determined by the photoplethysmography (PPG-) signal obtained by using image processing techniques from the video recordings taken with the smart phone camera. The video images taken from the people were first processed in the MATLAB^TM GUI (Graphical User Interface) and converted to RGB (Red-Green-Blue) components. When determining the heart rate, the red (red-R) component was selected from the RGB image components. From the red image component, low pass (5 Hz cut-off frequency) filters with a moving average (average shift) were applied to obtain the PPG signal. No additional hardware-circuit board was needed to find heart rate on the smartphone. The heartbeat value detected by the PPG signal obtained from the smart phone in the MATLAB^TM GUI environment is compared with the value measured by the pulse oximeter and the system safety is tested. The system aims to provide disease and condition detection with a compact and useful structure as possible thanks to the developing technology.
