2.4 GHz pattern reconfigurable corner reflector antennas using frequency selective conductor loops and strips

Long-range point-to-point wireless links typically use high gain, directional antennas in order to maximize link performance. However, the narrow beamwidth of the antennas makes such systems vulnerable to antenna misalignment, especially at longer distances. In this paper, we present two reconfigurable corner reflector antenna designs capable of electronically altering the beam direction in small angular increments. The added pattern reconfigurability is intended to mitigate the effects of antenna misalignment. The designs utilize frequency selective conductor loops and strips as reflective elements instead of solid sheets for the reflector. The designs were demonstrated to be capable of beam shifts lower than 5 degrees with a gain of at least 9.3 dBi. The antennas were designed for 2.4 GHz long-range WiFi links.
