A study of ferromagnetic object detection in ocean environment using empirical mode decomposition

As noise levels are high in shallow waters and coastal regions due to multipath propagation, reverberation, complex flow pattern of water etc. and the performances of acoustic systems are not always reliable, possibilities of using electromagnetic (EM) fields are investigated in this paper for underwater object detection. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) technique is used for the exploration of the magnetic anomaly in the earth's magnetic filed produced by ferromagnetic body. Numerical measurements are presented for a few realizable noisy ocean environments to depict the analysis techniques. Results show that the method showed in this paper is successful in detecting both large as well as small anomaly signal from decomposed Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs).
