QoS-based provisioning of ATM services over DAMA-controlled SATCOM networks

Military planners and warfighters are placing increasing emphasis on the need for multimedia applications, remote teleconferencing, and collaborative planning, thus placing significant demands on limited underlying network resources to provide end-to-end service guarantees for these applications. A quality of service (QoS)-based architecture provides a key to efficient and effective provisioning of multimedia services. As the only technology to handle this mix of communications media and to provide QoS guarantees, the ATM protocol serves as our foundation for this architecture. Under a Rome Research Laboratory program, Stanford Telecom (STel) is developing a QoS-based architecture to support the dynamic provisioning of different ATM service types (CBR, VBR-rt, VBR-nrt, ABR and UBR) over DAMA-controlled satellite communication (SATCOM) systems and wireless land mobile communication networks. In this paper, we focus specifically on the service provisioning of ATM services over DAMA-controlled SATCOM systems. We present our ATM/DAMA network configuration and examine ATM/DAMA protocol interworking. We then discuss our concepts for end-to-end service provisioning, detailing our framing and buffering procedures. Finally, we describe our OPNET model and simulation results for proof of concept.
