Investigating the Group D4 with the A♣, 2♣, 3♣ and 4♣

In this paper the dihedral group of order 4 (the symmetry group of the square) is described through its action, by means of “practical shuffles”, on a four-card deck of playing cards. This gives students a novel physical object for exploring the group's structure.
