Facing a persistent air pollution problem, China wants 5 million electric cars on its roadways by 2020. As the world's second-largest economy, China already buys half of the world's electric cars. India, another nation plagued by pollution, has vowed to sell only electric cars by 2030, while France and Britain both announced plans to ban sales of new diesel and gas cars by 2040. More automakers, in turn, are committing larger percentages of their lineups to electric and hybrid vehicles. Volvo, for instance, will include an electric motor in every vehicle model starting in 2019.
