Real-time distributed network management

Recently communication networks have become large and complex. The networks consist of a large amount of equipment and provide a variety of services. Also, network events occurring in the networks require the minimum of response time. However current practices cannot guarantee timely handling of network events. In this paper, we propose a real-time distributed network management (RTD-NM) which guarantees timely handling of network events. RTD-NM adopts the manager-agent management paradigm and the object-oriented concept like TMN and utilizes CMIS/CMIP as a management protocol. Therefore, we have designed RTD-NM which is structured in three layers: user interface, distributed management, managed object. We have implemented RTD-NM which can give time guarantees. Especially, timeliness of management is supported by the TMO model. The scheme presented in this paper supports timeliness, reliability, scalability, and efficiency in network management.
